BROWN BAGGED

Yo yo yiggady yo!

Harry’s back.

Was at Orchard Road with some friends last Saturday and the last thing I expected was to brown bag my head. I did. We all did.

A few guys distributed brown bags with eyeholes. When I saw it, KKK came to mind. And I’m like, you gotta be kidding me.
So we got curious and grabbed a few bags.

It was an ad campaign by this famous condom brand. The message was that nobody has to be embarassed to buy adult toys. No more disguises when you go to sex shops, no more nervous rushed purchases. You can now do it discreetly online.

I think this campaign was clever and successful to a certain degree. It brought out in the open a fear we all know- fear of being seen and getting caught patronizing adult shops.

And because it was obviously inspired by the infamous KKK head gear, people actually took notice. Some, saw it as good photo op! Like us hahaha.

What about you? Seen anything interesting on Orchard Road lately?

peace,
harry

BEND THE BULLET PLEASE

Hey Guys,

Been out of the power blogosphere for quite some time. I caught the preview of the flick Wanted and dang! That’s going straight to my list of favorite movies.

To rave and lust about Angelina Jolie would be, ya know, expected. (She’s HOOTTT).

Fire-and-curve-the-trajectory-of-the-shot without hitting the Fox that’s Angelina. Oh and make sure you do that in slowmo’!

I mean, WHAT? bend the bullet!

Yeah. Last time I was at the edge of my seat was when I caught Speed. The bus scene with Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock.

That’s the one!

Catch ya again next time!

peace,
harry

PLEASE NO FWDs!

Hi guys.

Like you, my day isn’t complete without checking my email.

Whatever good feelings you get from friends’ emails all just vanish when you realize, they don’t really say hello to you, all you get are forwarded messages.

Found this site where you can actually send a message – anonymously of course to your friends who love forwarding you messages.

A better, or should I say, a more polite option to ask them to stop this annoying habit.

stopforwarding.us. Check it out!

And since we’re talking about forwarded messages, what’s the most interesting you’ve received?

Peace!

harry

MAY DAY!

May Day couldn’t have rolled out any weirder.

Newsguy Karan, who with the rest of the newsies, hand deliver the news stories to us DJs, comes in and says, he badly needs some good shut eye.

Wishes that a fairy comes and whisks him off to bedland.

A conversation about mythical creatures or the lack thereof here in Singapore ensues.

Karan leaves in utter amusement after I regaled him with a few stroies on mythical creatures in the Philippines. Google aswang, tikbalang, tiyanak, kapre, if you wanna check out a few of ‘em.

Then MCR/Sound Engineer Sean comes in later and tells me about a pixie dust that enables people to grow back some parts of the body.

The day comes full circle, Karan and his fairies, Sean with his pixie dust.

How was your May Day?

peace,

harry

COOK-IN’ AMERICAN IDOL

Man, this season’s American Idol continues to be a surprise. Carly Smithson got the boot. Not to say that she had the weakest vocals this week singing the Andrew Lloyd Webber song Superstar!

In fact she rocked it the same way she rocked almost all her performances. But American Idol is a popularity contest, relying on building up a fanbase to vote for you week after week.

That being said, almost everyone remaining in the top 5 - David Archuleta, Jason Castro, David Cook, Brooke White have built up strong fanbases. Syesha Mercado, despite being very talented, continues to be in the bottom 3.

So clearly, it’s not a case of who can sing, but a case of who has the biggest fanbase. However, David Cook is in a class all his own. By virtue of his amazing vocal talent, he has managed to stay in the competition. Safe to say, his fanbase is comprised of those who think this competiton should give the best singer the prize!

And who should win this season? David Cook. C’mon, WHAATT?!!

Ok, here’s the thing. Let’s say, you go in your favorite record shop. Whose album are u buying? Pick 3, then you’ll probably have your TOP 3 idols.

1. DAVID COOK Pop/Melodic Rock
2. JASON CASTRO Folk/Acoustic/Pop
3. SYESHA MERCADO Pop /Soul n Rnb
4. BROOK WHITE Pop Ballad
5. DAVID ARCHULETA Best of Disney/ Inspirational Songs/High School Musical

For now, we wait.

WAT A GWAAN!

Sean Kingston was my in-studio guest today . Frankly I didn’t know what to expect. But I knew it was gonna be a great interview. I mean, c’mon, he’s probably one of the hottest artists in the music biz now!

You might wonder what his favorite song is from his album. It’s “Take You There”!

A dream collaboration would be with Beyonce!

On his ipod is Akon. His fave Singaporean food..well…where to start? I dig his new song “There’s Nothin’!

He is 18, with a best selling album, a string of hits..ranks 2nd on Forbes’ list of the year’s hottest music stars! Not a bad place to be!

SAN FRANCISCO STORY

While in California 2 months ago, I found a cheaper way of travelling to San Francisco from LA. I wanted to hitch hike, but I wasn’t familiar with the place and I didn’t have a lot of time.

So I called up California Shuttle and boarded their service in downtown Los Angeles. I paid $45 one way. The 7 hour ride would have been a torture had it not been for the fact that I travelled with some cool people : May and Michelle from London and Patrick from Australia.

The ride was scenic, but after miles and miles of grassy hills, valleys and grapevines and cattle farms, I dozed off. Fast food diners and filling stations dotted the otherwise deserted roadsides.valleys.jpggrape-vines.jpgpumping.jpgmay-and-mishelle.jpgpatrick.jpgpitstop.jpgpumping.jpg

When I arrived around 730 pm, there was heavy downpour in the city. My high school friend Moses picked me up and we had dinner at the Cheesecake Factory on top of Macy’s on Union Square. Yummmm… Then on foot, we explored some of downtown’s major streets.

Early the next day, my friend took me to see the Golden Gate bridge. It was around 12 degrees, but that didn’t stop me from rolling down the window. I love the weather in the Bay Area. We drove through the bridge and stopped on a view top where I took shot after shot of the Golden Gate. Then, my camera’s battery died on me.

So I had to buy 4 disposable cameras, which to this day, remain undeveloped. Will show them to you next time!golden-gate-6.jpg

GOODY BAGS…GOOD YEARS

I was right smack in the middle of packing goody bags at the Singapore Turf Club last Saturday when it dawned on me that at around this time, back in 1993 I introduced myself and delivered my first news story on the air in Manila. The start of my career in radio.

I was a newscaster for a year but then I had to quit and go back to school to learn more about wildlife ecology, politics and growing up.

3 years later I was back in radio, this time, as a DJ. Stayed for a year and left to pursue a certificate course in broadcasting at NYU.

1998, I was back in radio and had the most productive and fulfilling experience as a full time DJ and production director whilst teaching journalism, speech and literature on the side at a community school.

How time flies. It would be nice to take time out and celebrate my journey. That’s if I can manage to crawl out from all the goody bags I have been packing…

ACOUSTIC LOUNGE ON AIR!

I’m psyched about my new Sunday show. It’s called Acoustic Lounge. Shirlyn Tan was my first guest last weekend and boy did she rock it!

I hope to see more local artists come to the show and just have a great time. So tell your friends about it. Sundays, 4 pm are reserved for some live acoustic music!

VALENTINE GIFTS ANYONE?

harry2.jpg
Hey guys check out a list of weird Valentine gifts I made in college. I was poor and all I had was my love to give. Teehee!

A Mini Tombstone. A palm sized one with the words “Til death do us part!” If that does not express “undying” love and devotion to her, i don’t know what will! Oh, so it doesn’t scare your girl, and you don’t come across as some hardcore morbid guy, you can color it red or whatever funky color your girl digs.

A Human Heart. A fake one of course! (What? I was a pre-med student! ) It’s symbolic in a way that when you present it to your girl, it’s like you’re actually giving your heart to her, literally! Talk about the ultimate sacrifice. Dude, can it get any more romantic? Haha

An Old Valentine Card from when you were young. The first one that you handmade. Yes, that one that you stayed up all night for but somehow never had the courage to give to her. That one! It has I LOVE YOU in it -the very first time you’ve written that for someone special. Remember the first time. Remember the feeling of your first love. Then add a new note that says, “Meeting you is like loving again for the very first time.” (K, I’m trying to keep a staright face here dude…)

One Large Coke when you’re going out to dinner. Just one. Finish half of it, then give the rest to her. If she asks what’s going on and why you bought only one, look her in the eyes and tell her, “That’s ‘coz, you complete me.” (Gawd..this is cheeesssyyyyy… i love it!)

And finally, rounding up my weird Valentine gift list, pick out 2 dragonflies from the fields, or butterflies, maybe 2 snails, put a pair inside a jar. Make sure the lid has holes so them dragonflies can breathe. Attach a note that says, “We’re in this together.” Awwwww.

So there. My weird Valentine gift list. Honestly, now that I’m all grown up, and with extra moolah to spare, I still think this list rocks man!

Have a slammin’ Valentine!
